A Communications Officer is driven, passionate, and ready to take on a challenge. Communications Officers are the first point of contact for citizens in the community in need of police, fire, or medical assistance. They are a vital link in the public safety system and are dedicated to serving and making a difference in their community and being a lifeline for their responders.
Communications Officers are highly trained and use their critical-thinking skills to quickly problem solve for callers and responders. They thrive in a team-focused and professional environment while coordinating responses to large-scale incidents and handling multiple tasks at one time.
Our Communications Officers go through extensive training, most of which is on-the-job. The initial training for 911 call-taking takes approximately 3 months. Training is paid from day one and SLVECC provides the training and resources to obtain the following certifications:
Many of our dispatchers have also completed several months of additional training to dispatch Police and Fire/EMS units on the radios.
To maintain skills and keep on top of an ever-changing industry, all dispatchers complete over 20 hours annually of continuing education in Police, Fire, and Medical related training.
An EMD-certified Dispatcher can provide life-saving medical instructions to callers before emergency responders arrive on scene. This includes a wide variety of medical-related issues from CPR to child birth to breathing problems and more.
